ATHANASIOS DIAKOS(1788 - 1821)
A Greek Military Commander during the Greek War of Independence respected as a venerable national hero of Greece, Athanasios Diakos was 17 years old when became a monk and later a deacon. But he soon had to flee into the mountains to become a klepht with the pseudonym Diakos. Serving a lot of local klepht leaders of Roumeli, he distinguished himself in various battles. The brutal manner of his death by the enemy made him a martyr of the Greek War for Liberty.
